We know it can be confusing, especially when there are poor quality pieces on the market using low grade or acrylic “crystals” or plastic imitation pearls and micro thin plating. It can be difficult to see the real quality in a photo, so we apologize for the poor quality of some of our images shown but can guarantee the “real” quality of all our pieces sold. We have various level quality pieces in the collection, which is very fairly reflected in the price.
Our sale items are our usual quality and genuinely reduced for clearance so we can update our ranges periodically. If you have any questions please contact us, here are a few explanations I hope will be helpful.
Pearls vary in value greatly, from a few cents to thousands of dollars, we use the best quality pearls to suit the design. Here are the grades of pearl we generally use.
These are good quality pearls assisted by a man made process, a centre of shell is inserted in the shell fish or oyster and harvested when a heavy layer of natural nacre is built up on it, looks like a rare natural pearl.
Fresh water pearls
A type of cultured pearl where a fresh water shell fish is used. This creates a natural elongated “baroque” pearl shape, many colours can be created but we use a natural light ivory tone which goes well with most bridal fabrics.
“Cultura” imitation pearls
These are a top quality shell based imitation pearl made in Korea, we use these for a natural looking ivory pearl in many of our drop earrings.
Imitation or “faux” pearls
Generally if we refer to “faux” white, ivory or cream pearls we mean imitation, there are literally hundreds of grades available, some are truly awful, we only use good quality realistic colored pearls with a glass or shell core and a nice quality luster.
This used to be referred to as cubic zirconia also, it is a high grade man made gem used to simulate diamonds, it is harder than crystal and gets is sparkle from its facets, it doesn’t have a shiny backing and has a more natural sparkle than diamante. Our CZ pieces are all in jeweller’s style settings, no glue is used, several qualities are available but our top grade CZ really looks like the real thing.
We only use quality high grade crystal diamante, no glass or acrylic, with a thin metallic coating on the back these have lots of sparkle.
This is a hard wearing glass compound with its own special recipe, it holds a cut or facet well giving lots of sparkle. Most of the crystal used here is clear although special effects and colors are sometimes available on custom pieces.
AB, aurora borealis, crystal is a color effect with a hint of pinks etc looking like “soap bubbles” often used in vintage jewellery from the 50’s and 60’s.
This generally refers to plating, an electro plated precious metal layer, the thickness of the plating can vary and the quality. We guarantee the quality of all our plated pieces but recommend you take reasonable care when wearing and storing the piece to protect it. We use non-allergenic nickel free rhodium and gold plated finishes. We sometimes use black nickel in brooches and hair accessories, which is not recommended for earring studs or hooks due to the nickel content.
Often sterling silver pieces which tarnish and white gold jewellery are coated with a “rhodium” finish this is a white metal more precious than gold with a high shine that does not tarnish and requires minimal cleaning. We use it on all pieces unless stated otherwise.
All our bracelets and necklaces have easy to use secure catches. Some are fitted with an Illusion clasp which is not obvious as an opening, a nice touch on an elaborate bracelet. Other styles have a push in catch with safety clips which clip down on either side for extra peace of mind. Adjustable fasteners are usually a small “parrot” clasp with an extension chain so you can vary the length yourself. Hinged bangles are oval and in two sections with a hinge, they open out then clip back on to wear.
